Iranian parliamentarian: Agriculture key to overcoming economic woes

Tehran – A member of the Iranian Parliament and the Agriculture Commission emphasized that the agricultural sector has the potential to steer the country out of its current economic difficulties.

Peyman Falsafi highlighted the central role of agriculture in Iran’s economy, noting that the Seventh Development Plan aims for 7% overall economic growth, with agriculture contributing 5.5%.

He stressed that agriculture should be recognized as a pillar of national independence, reflecting the guidance of Imam Khomeini and the Leader. “Food security is the foundation of national security, and it must be defended decisively at all levels,” he said.

Pointing to budget allocations for the sector, Falsafi noted that 3% of the National Development Fund in the 2025 budget is designated for agricultural development projects. "In addition, 1% of import duties on agricultural inputs and food products can be used to support domestic production and research."

Falsafi also underlined the importance of commercializing scientific and research achievements, noting that knowledge-based exhibitions have revealed significant opportunities to expand agricultural research and attract investment. “Turning research into market-ready solutions and guiding investment toward agriculture are top priorities for the Agriculture Commission,” he concluded.
