Iran world’s fourth largest apple producer
Iran has exported 550,000 tons of apples worth $172 million
in the past Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20), the director-general of
the Agricultural Ministry's office of cold and dry regions fruits said.
Darioush Salempur said on Tuesday that Pakistan, Iraq,
India, Russia and Afghanistan were the top five export buyers of Iranian apples
in that year.
In 2021-2022, more than 985 tons of apples were exported and
Iran claimed the second place that year after China, he added.
The official said, however, that total apple production in
Iran in the year to March 20 reached nearly four million tons, showing a 7
percent decrease compared to the previous year mainly due to cold snaps and
cold spells.
He said the total area of lands dedicated to apple farming
in Iran has increased to 247,000 hectares.
“Iran is the third country in the
world in terms of the area of apple farms and is the fourth largest producer of
various types of apples,” said Salempur.
