Isfahan - Iran has introduced a new high-density forage maize cultivation model that could save up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of water annually if adopted nationwide, according to the Isfahan Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center.

Masoud Torabi, head of the center, said the initiative was developed to help the agricultural sector adapt to climate change while improving water and energy efficiency.

He noted that Iran's arid and semi-arid climate makes climate-resilient farming practices increasingly essential.

“The new cultivation pattern combines optimized farm management with more efficient irrigation, reducing water use, energy consumption, and production costs. It also limits weed growth by decreasing the irrigated soil surface, lowering the need for weed control.”

Torabi said the model has already been successfully tested in Tehran Province and could serve as an effective nationwide strategy for enhancing climate resilience, improving water management, and increasing farmers' profitability.
