Iran meets 70 percent of world demand for Damask rose

Iran is the world’s biggest producer of damask rose,
accounting for 70% of the global production, according to vice president of
planning and economic affairs of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.

“70 percent of global demand for
damask roses is met by Iran,” Shahpour Alaei-Moqaddam said on Wednesday.

He added that Fars Province has the largest area under rose
cultivation whereas the city of Kashan in Isfahan Province is the main hub of
rosewater production in Iran.

Alaei-Moqaddam, however, said the country’s share in Damask
rose business is insignificant globally.

Damask rose is renowned for its fine fragrance and it is the
main ingredient of all perfumes. Used in perfumery and aromatherapy, absolutes
are similar to essential oils. They are concentrated, highly aromatic, oily
mixtures extracted from plants such as Damask rose.

Iran has been mentioned as the birthplace of Damask rose,
regardless of the name.
