Iran launches 2 open sea cage farming projects in Bushehr
province
Iran has started two open sea cage farming projects in
Tangestan county, southwestern Bushehr province, the head of the province's
fishery department announced.
"With the launch of these two projects, the number of
sea cage farming projects in county will increase to nine," Abuzar Habibi said
on Saturday.
Currently, there are about 2.5 million baby fish under
harvest in the cages, he added.
Cage fish farming is a relatively new method in Iran,
whereby cages are placed in lakes, ponds, rivers or seas to breed fish until
they can be harvested.
The practice, under which fishes are grown in mesh
enclosures, has expanded as farmers have found it to be profitable because of
the scope to grow a higher quantity of fishes in cages compared to ponds,
according to fisheries officials, farmers and researchers.
