Iran forecasts over 8m tons of wheat purchases from domestic farmers
Iran's Ministry of Agriculture anticipates purchasing 8 to 8.5 million tons of guaranteed wheat yields from domestic farmers this year.
Sohrab Sohrabi, the head of Agriculture Ministry’s executive of “Wheat Project” provided these estimates on Saturday, reflecting the growth of Iran's wheat cultivation sector.
He explained that the total irrigated wheat cultivation area under contract has increased six-fold, reaching 1.55 million hectares this year, up from 250,000 hectares in the previous year, bnp reported.
Iran's total irrigated wheat cultivation area now stands at 1.99 million hectares, while the rain-fed wheat cultivation area is 3.96 million hectares, totaling 5.95 million hectares.
According to Sohrabi, the country's total wheat needs comprise 10 million tons for bakeries, 2 million tons for trade and industry, 1.2 million tons for seeds, and 300,000 tons for other uses. Iran's annual need for wheat yields is approximately 12.5 million tons. The anticipated purchase of 8 to 8.5 million tons of guaranteed wheat yields from domestic farmers demonstrates Iran's progress in meeting its wheat requirements through its own cultivation efforts.
The significant increase in wheat cultivation in Iran is a testament to the country's commitment to enhancing its agricultural sector and achieving greater self-sufficiency in meeting domestic wheat demands. The growth in wheat cultivation will not only benefit Iran's economy but also contribute to food security and stability for its population.
