Iran deploys ultrasound in slaughterhouses to protect breeding livestock

Tehran — Iran has begun equipping slaughterhouses with ultrasound devices to identify and protect breeding livestock, a senior veterinary official said on Sunday.

Seyed Saeed Hosseini, Deputy for Health and Prevention at the Veterinary Organization, said the move aims to preserve the country’s reproductive herds and will be expanded nationwide.

The initiative, launched in several provinces over the past two years, uses ultrasound screening to detect female and breeding animals before slaughter.

“In industrial slaughterhouses, this is not an issue, but traditional facilities still pose challenges,” Hosseini told reporters, calling for the full conversion of traditional slaughterhouses to industrial operations.

The senior official also reported progress in disease control, citing monitoring system data showing a 47% drop in Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) outbreaks, a 35% decline in anthrax, an 8% reduction in lumpy skin disease, and a 16% fall in brucellosis cases.
