Official

A total of over 3,610 tons of bony fish were harvested in
the three northern provinces bordering the Caspian Sea since the beginning of
the fishing season in early October, registering a 66% increase compared to the
same period last year, an official said.

Noting that the province of Mazandaran has the biggest share
of the total annual fish yield followed by Gilan and Golestan, caretaker of
Iran Fisheries Organization’s Department of Harvest and Port Affairs Mostafa
Beheshtian said, “The share of Mazandaran was 52 percent, while the share of
Gilan and Golestan respectively stood and 46 and 6 percent”.

Of the total yield, 72% were mullets, 24% were Caspian
kutum, 2% common carp and the remaining 2% were other types of fish, he said.

The harvest season for bony fish in the Caspian Sea begins
in October and lasts until April the next year. Some 15 species of bony fish
inhabit the Caspian Sea.

Elsewhere in his remakes, Beheshtian referred to the
country’s constant plan to release sturgeon babies in the Caspian Sea, and
said, “Over 2,431 sturgeon babies were released in the sea by the end the
fishing season”.
