FAO recognizes four new sites as GIAHS, Iran maintains 4th place worldwide

Rome – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has added four new sites to its list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), recognizing traditional farming systems in the Republic of Korea, Portugal, and Tajikistan for their unique agricultural, ecological, and cultural value.

Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture announced that the Agricultural Planning, Economic and Rural Development Research Institute (APERDRI), which serves as the country’s GIAHS focal point, has successfully registered six of Iran’s traditional agricultural systems to date.

This accomplishment places Iran in fourth position globally, tied with Spain, in the number of GIAHS recognitions, following China, Japan, and South Korea.

These heritage designations aim to promote sustainable agriculture, preserve biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of farming communities by highlighting their time-tested practices and cultural significance.
