Establishment of the Supreme Soil Council in Iran
In a letter to the President, the Minister of
Jihad-Agriculture requested for the formation of a High Soil Council chaired by
the President, Dr. Hasan Rouhani. Kazem Khavazi, Minister of Jihad-Agriculture,
in a letter to President Hassan Rouhani, noting that soil is of critical
importance as a national asset, and the main basis for agriculture and the
environment, as well as economic activities, stated that: As mentioned in the
supreme leader's speech, in regard to the soil, as a "more important issue
than water", and you have called it as "the first very large
capital"
This God-given blessing is considered non-renewable on the
scale of human life, and severe damage caused by soil degradation and pollution
such as erosion, land use change, salinity, reduction of organic matter, and
reduction of soil fertility has seriously challenged this basic resource.
Minister of Jihad-Agriculture has asked the President,
noting that the issue of soil and its exploitation is a multifaceted issue,
that: In order to further coordinate the determination and implementation of
sustainable land use strategies, a high soil council should be established to
be responsible for policy-making, coordination and oversight.
