Wheat harvest underway in northwestern Iran’s Maragheh

Maragheh – The annual wheat harvest has begun in Maragheh, a major agricultural hub in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, where approximately 1,000 hectares of farmland are devoted to wheat cultivation.

Local farmers, who began planting the crop in autumn, are now reaping the rewards of months of work. Harvesting is expected to continue for several weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Agricultural officials say wheat remains one of the most important staple crops in the region, both for local consumption and for supply to national grain reserves. The harvest period not only supports the livelihoods of hundreds of farming families but also contributes to Iran’s broader food security.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Iran produced over 13 million tons of wheat in 2022 and 13.5 million tons in 2023.
