Use of Nano-Selenium gives boost to sweet corn yield in Iran

Yasuj - Researchers at an agricultural research center in the southwestern city of Yasuj, in collaboration with Yasuj University, have achieved a significant increase in sweet corn yields through the use of nanotechnology and mycorrhizal fungi.

According to Moslem Bahmankar, the lead researcher, the combined application of nano-selenium and mycorrhizal fungi increased the yield of sweet corn cobs and kernels by approximately 40% under full irrigation.

“Even under severe water stress, the crop performed significantly better than with conventional methods.”

Published in the international journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, the study highlights how mycorrhizal fungi improve water and nutrient uptake through the roots, while nano-selenium enhances photosynthetic activity and increases plant tolerance to environmental stresses, together supporting the sustainable production of sweet corn.

Researchers emphasize that this approach could serve as a practical solution for cultivating sweet corn in water-limited regions. The findings have been presented in two scientific papers at the National Conference on Climate Change, Sustainable Agriculture, and Natural Resource Management, where they were officially accepted.
