Seawater-irrigated Salicornia trial launched in Gomishan to combat dust storms
Golestan Province – A five-hectare pilot project cultivating the salt-tolerant plant Salicornia, using seawater irrigation, has commenced in Gomishan.
The initiative targets both dust storm mitigation and economic improvement for local farmers.
Abbas Ali Nazeri, Director of Agriculture at the Golestan Provincial Agricultural Organization, said the project, in partnership with the National Salinity Research Center, aims to utilize previously unproductive saline lands and seawater resources.
Salicornia, a halophyte, is capable of thriving with seawater irrigation. This project is envisioned as a model for sustainable agricultural development in Iran's arid and semi-arid regions.
