Qanat restoration efforts underway in South Khorasan
South Khorasan – Home to 6,983 qanats, South Khorasan province, in the east of Iran, has more of these ancient underground water channels than any other province in Iran, an official says.
According to Mohammadi, director of the Water, Soil and Technical Engineering Department at the province's Agricultural Jihad Organization, 256 qanat networks totaling 77 kilometers in length were restored during the past Iranian year (1404).
“The project—carried out with direct participation from local water users—cost over 121 billion tomans, strengthening water supplies and bringing renewed hope to farmers in arid regions.”
Qanats account for about 25% of the province's water resources and are considered the highest-quality and most efficient water source in the area, Mohammadi added.
