Washington – More than half of American farmers are dissatisfied with current federal policies, according to a new survey that signals growing unrest within a core Republican constituency – the president's own political base.

 

The poll, conducted by Farm Journal in partnership with Amato Advisors, surveyed 974 farmers across 44 states. The findings reveal deep anxiety over foreign policy and rising costs, FarmProgress reported. 

 

A striking 94% of respondents said that conflict with Iran would directly harm their operations, driving energy and input costs to unprecedented levels. Meanwhile, 78% identified the price of machinery, fertilizer, fuel, seeds, and chemicals as their three greatest challenges.

 

The financial strain is already reshaping long-term plans for many farm families. More than a quarter of those surveyed – 26% – said the current climate has reduced the likelihood of passing their farm on to the next generation.

 

While 60% of American farmers said they always or usually vote Republican, trust in elected officials has sharply eroded. Nearly three-quarters – 73% – now feel that their representatives in Washington do not understand the realities of farm life.

 

Perhaps most concerning for both major parties, 39% of farmers said they remain undecided ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Additionally, one in three farmers expressed trust in neither Democrats nor Republicans to resolve pressing issues such as input costs, trade, and farm income.

 

Michael Amato, director of the polling firm, warned that the results should be taken seriously.

 

"This is a warning signal from the president's own backyard," Amato said. "It should not be ignored."

 

The survey underscores a growing disconnect between Washington policymakers and the agricultural community – a historically reliable voting bloc that appears increasingly open to abandoning traditional party loyalties.
