Lorestan - Iran’s western Lorestan Province has launched a program to develop orchards on sloped, low-yield lands using drought-resistant crops such as almonds and olives, aiming to boost productivity while reducing pressure on water resources, an official said.

 

Mr. Beiranvand, head of horticulture at the provincial Agriculture Organization, said the initiative supports climate-adaptive cropping patterns, enhances economic returns, and promotes more efficient water use.

 

“The first phase targets 100 hectares of sloped terrain. Around 60 hectares of almond orchards have already been established in colder areas of the province, with remaining development underway.”

 

He said the program complements ongoing orchard expansion on irrigated land and prioritizes low water-demand species to lower production costs and improve resource efficiency.

 

Beyond productivity gains, the project is expected to reduce soil erosion, expand vegetative cover, support sustainable rural employment, and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture in the province, the provincial official noted.
