New Delhi — Iran has called for expanded South-South cooperation in agriculture and food security, urging BRICS members to deepen collaboration in addressing shared challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, rural poverty, and food insecurity.

 

Speaking at the BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in India, Iran’s Minister of Agriculture, Gholamreza Nouri, emphasized that stronger cooperation among developing countries is essential for advancing sustainable agriculture and enhancing global food security.

 

Nouri highlighted the significant potential of developing nations in agricultural production, indigenous technologies, natural resource management, and rural development. He called for the establishment of more effective mechanisms within BRICS to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise, innovation, and agricultural technologies.

 

The minister also outlined Iran’s efforts to strengthen agricultural resilience in the face of climate change, noting that more than 90 percent of the country is located in arid and semi-arid regions. He pointed to government-backed initiatives aimed at improving sustainable resource management and adapting to changing environmental conditions.

 

In addition, Nouri highlighted Iran’s programs to empower rural women and youth, describing them as key drivers of rural development, agricultural productivity, and food security.

 

Iran’s proposal to enhance South-South cooperation in agriculture and food security was warmly received by participating delegations, with several member states describing it as a constructive initiative for expanding agricultural cooperation and strengthening food security across the BRICS bloc.
