Tehran - Persistent efforts by Iranian animal science researchers, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal Production Division and the Veterinary Organization, have yielded significant improvements in the production metrics of native Iranian sheep breeds, according to an official.

This progress was announced by Hassan Khamisabadi, Director of the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran, said.

He underscored that these joint ventures and focused research have enhanced the production efficiency and overall output of Iran's indigenous livestock.

Drawing attention to Iran's position in the global livestock market, Khamisabadi stated that the country is a leading mutton producer worldwide. He attributed this success to Iran's robust livestock farming sector and the positive outcomes of selective breeding programs and enhanced animal husbandry techniques.

The official further pointed out that Iran also maintains strong positions in the production of goat meat, honey, milk, poultry, and eggs.

 

Outlining future objectives, Khamisabadi detailed ongoing plans to further elevate sheep production nationwide. He explained that breed enhancement programs and initiatives aimed at increasing the productivity of native sheep are central strategies for boosting the country's red meat supply.

 

He also highlighted the diverse range of sheep breeds across Iran as a valuable asset, enabling the country to capitalize on the varying capabilities of livestock in different regions.

 

This diversity, Khamisabadi noted, allows for potential daily weight gains that vary from 130 grams in lighter breeds to over 300 grams in heavier breeds like the Sanjabi.
