Iran unveils new drought-resistant melon variety
Sistan and Baluchestan — A new variety of white melon, named "Sisto",has been officially registered in Iran’s National Catalogue of Agricultural Varieties, according to the head of the Sistan and Baluchestan province’s Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center.
“Developed after years of extensive field research,Sistois a drought-tolerant, high-yield melon known for its exceptional aroma and flavor. Tailored to withstand the harsh climatic conditions of the Sistan region, the variety has been approved by the National Variety Release Committee and is hailed as a major step toward sustainable agriculture in arid zones,” Mohammadreza Naruee.
“This is a significant achievement for the agricultural sector in Sistan,” he added.
“TheSistomelon’s resilience to drought, combined with its outstanding quality, has the potential to significantly increase farmers’ income and strengthen Iran’s position in horticultural exports.”
He added that the success of this project was made possible through the full support of the provincial Agricultural Organization and the collaboration of researchers and experts in the field.
“With these efforts,” the official said, “we hope Sisto will become a symbol of modern, resilient agriculture in Iran and a model for innovation in other climate-challenged regions.”
