saffron export increases 28 percent
TEHRAN (MAJ) - The value of Iran’s saffron export increased
by 28 percent in the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year
(started on March 21, 2023) compared to the same period of time in the previous
year, according to the chairman of the Iranian Saffron Exporters and Sellers
Union.
According to Gholamreza Miri, Iranian saffron farmers
exported 136 million tons of the product valued at about $135 million in the
mentioned eight months, registering a 28 percent and a 13 percent hike in
weight and value respectively compared to the same period last year.
He pointed to the production and export situation of saffron
in the current year and added, “According to the Islamic Republic of Iran
Customs Administration (IRICA), 286 tons of saffron, valued at more than $340
million, were exported from the country to the target markets last year
(2022).”
Miri put the value of the saffron exported from the country
in the first eight months of the previous Iranian calendar year (March 21 to
November 22, 2022) at $120 million.
In this period, Iran’s saffron was mainly exported to Spain,
the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China and Afghanistan, he added.
Iran is one of the world’s top saffron producers and over 90
percent of its production is exported to foreign destinations.
