Tehran – Iran has achieved 99% self-sufficiency in producing modern irrigation equipment, a  key step toward sustainable agriculture and strengthened food security.

 

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that with the participation of more than 1,200 consulting firms and contractors, along with over 300 domestic manufacturers of irrigation equipment, the country now has the capacity to implement 400,000 hectares of modern irrigation projects annually.

 

Officials said the program, designed to optimize water use and raise farm productivity, has already delivered significant benefits. By reducing water consumption, increasing efficiency, and improving crop yields, the initiative is helping preserve vital water resources while supporting rural livelihoods, particularly in disadvantaged regions.

 

Modern technologies such as localized and subsurface irrigation, alongside smart irrigation systems, have been introduced to curb evaporation and allow precise, targeted water management, capabilities that traditional methods could not provide.

 

The Ministry emphasized that the scheme not only enhances agricultural output and quality but also improves the living standards of rural households, strengthens food security, reduces migration pressures, and promotes population stability in border areas.

 

Described as a model of advanced technology integration in agriculture, Iran’s modern irrigation program is expected to play a decisive role in conserving water and driving the country toward more sustainable farming practices.
