Bushehr – Iran has secured the 10th spot globally in shrimp production, according to the deputy head of Health and Prevention at the Iranian Veterinary Organization (IVO).

 

Speaking at a meeting with private sector stakeholders and officials from the livestock, poultry, and aquaculture sectors in Bushehr Province, Seyed Saeed Hosseini emphasized the key role of five Iranian provinces in shrimp farming. He stressed that adherence to international standards is crucial for expanding exports and increasing foreign currency revenues.

 

Highlighting the importance of veterinary services in ensuring food security, he pointed out that preventive measures to control animal diseases and zoonoses (diseases transmitted between animals and humans) have a direct impact on both public health and production efficiency.

 

Bushehr, the official noted, holds a special position as the country’s leading shrimp-producing province. To achieve sustainable growth in this sector, he underscored the need to strengthen biosecurity protocols and improve health management practices in aquaculture.

 

Hosseini also detailed the Veterinary Organization’s ongoing initiatives, including the deployment of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the implementation of a national disease monitoring and surveillance program, the establishment of specialized laboratories across public and private sectors, and the continuous prevention and control of animal diseases.

 

Addressing broader industry trends, the deputy head of Health and Prevention at IVO said that while global aquaculture is growing at an annual rate of 4.5%, Iran’s aquaculture industry is expanding at 7.5%.

 

He added that Iran now ranks first globally in freshwater rainbow trout production, seventh in warm-water fish farming, and tenth in shrimp production.
