Iran forecasts 1,400 tons of fresh silk cocoon production this spring

Tehran – Iran is expected to produce between 1,350 and 1,400 tons of fresh silk cocoons during the current spring silkworm rearing season, according to the head of the National Sericulture Center.

To support this year's production cycle, a total of 38,814 boxes of silkworm eggs have been distributed among approximately 21,000 sericulturists in various provinces across the country, Habibollah Rezadoost said.

He added, “The largest distributions were recorded in the provinces of Gilan, North Khorasan, Golestan, Razavi Khorasan, Mazandaran, Isfahan, and East Azarbaijan. Notably, Golestan Province saw a 13% increase in egg distribution compared to last year, while North Khorasan recorded a 14% rise.”

Rezadoost said that of the total supply, 5,000 boxes of silkworm eggs were produced domestically, while around 40,000 boxes were imported.

He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has initiated a strategic plan aimed at achieving full self-sufficiency in silkworm egg production within the next three years.
