Iran begins random sampling to ensure saffron export quality

Tehran - The National Standards Organization of Iran is implementing random sampling in a bid to enhance saffron export quality.

The National Standards Organization of Iran's Office of Export and Import Commodity Quality Assessment has issued a directive outlining new procedures for monitoring the quality of export-bound saffron through random sampling.

Starting March 5, 2025, saffron export shipments will undergo random quality sampling at customs, with initial clearance granted immediately.

Subsequent shipments from exporters passing the initial quality test will be exempt from further sampling.

Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Canada, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Australia, Taiwan, Sweden, Turkey, Malaysia, Switzerland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Mauritius, Singapore, Thailand, Norway, Romania, Japan, Bangladesh, Austria, South Africa, Pakistan, Philippines, New Zealand, Jordan, Indonesia, Croatia, Brazil, Ireland, Denmark, South Korea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia were also among the importers of Iran’s red gold.

Iran is one of the world’s top saffron producers and over 90 percent of its production is exported to foreign destinations.
