Iran, Yemen to expand fishery cooperation

Iran and Yemen have agreed to set up a joint working group
with the aim of boosting cooperation in the sector fishery and aquaculture.

In a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, the heads of the two
country’s Fishery Organization discussed ways to expand ties in areas related
to fishery and aquaculture.

In order to develop bilateral relations between the Islamic
Republic of Iran and the Republic of Yemen in the field of fishery, a working
group consisting of managers and experts from the two countries will be formed
to examine the fields of cooperation and prepare the ground, Hossein Hosseini
and Hussein Attas stressed.

Hosseini put the country’s annual fishery production at
1.352 million, saying that the production in the mentioned sector has increased
by 98 percent since the Islamic Revolution.

“We are ready to transfer our
processing technology to Yemen,” the head of Iran’s Fisheries Organization
(IFO) added.

Attas, for his part, pointed to his country’s ports and
said, “Yemen can serve as a exports gate for Iran given to its 2,800-long water
border”.

Iran's aquaculture industry is on a wave of progress and has
world ranks in the production of some fishery products. The country exported
$600 million worth of fishery products in the previous Iranian calendar year
1401.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
believes that Iran plays a responsible and central role in the fishing and
aquaculture industry in the region, and for this reason, it can be considered a
model for the countries of the region.
