Fars – Harvesting of figs has begun in Iran's southern Fars Province, which accounts for the vast majority of the country's dried fig production, provincial agricultural officials said.

Ahad Bahjat-Haghighi, head of the Fars Agricultural Organization, said the harvest will continue through mid-October. Of Iran's 43,000 hectares of rain-fed fig orchards, 41,000 hectares are located in Fars, producing about 34,000 metric tons annually.

He noted that Fars' dried figs, recognized under the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) program, generate significant export revenue, with more than 80% shipped to China and European markets.

The official added that the province is prioritizing orchard rehabilitation and modern cultivation practices to improve productivity, while emphasizing hygienic harvesting and quality standards to strengthen the global competitiveness of Iranian figs.
