Fars – Fars Province, a major center for medicinal plants in southern Iran, is emerging as a national model for sustainable agriculture by expanding the cultivation of flixweed, a low-water-demand crop.

 

Regarded as Iran’s “brown gold” hub, Fars has strengthened its position as the country’s leading producer of flixweed, highlighting its importance in water-efficient agriculture and climate adaptation strategies.

 

Experts say the expansion of drought-resistant crops such as flixweed (khakshir) supports national policies on water conservation while improving food security and reducing pressure on water resources.

 

With government support and modern farming techniques, Fars is expected to further enhance its role in medicinal plant production and expand its presence in regional and export markets.

 

Due to its low water needs and resilience to harsh conditions, khakshir is seen as a strategic crop for semi-arid regions. Officials also report that its cultivation has increased farmer incomes due to lower production costs and mechanized harvesting, while high-quality output—especially from Marvdasht, boosts its market competitiveness.
