Tehran – Iran is expected to retain its position as the world's 14th largest wheat producer in 2025, with output forecast to reach 13.7 million tons, according to the latest report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

 

The projected harvest marks a 14.2% increase from last year's 12 million tons, making Iran the second-fastest growing wheat producer among major producing countries, behind Türkiye, which is expected to post a 26.7% increase.

 

FAO attributed the stronger outlook to favorable weather conditions, particularly above-average winter and spring rainfall, which also aligns with domestic production estimates.

 

China is forecast to remain the world's largest wheat producer with 140 million tons, followed by the European Union (136.2 million tons) and India (120.2 million tons). Iran will maintain its 14th-place ranking behind Russia, the United States, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Ukraine, Argentina, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

 

The report also warns that disruptions to fertilizer trade through the Strait of Hormuz could weigh on global grain production, with world wheat output projected to decline by 3.8%. FAO forecasts wheat production will fall by 21.3% in the United States, 22.2% in Kazakhstan, 19.4% in Argentina, and 5.6% in the European Union this year.
