Tehran – Bushehr Province in south maintained its status as Iran’s leading shrimp-producing region last year, harvesting 30,460 tons of farmed shrimp and accounting for more than 50% of the country’s total production, according to provincial fisheries officials.

Bushehr Fisheries Director General Aqil Amini said the province also produced more than three billion shrimp larvae, reinforcing its position as Iran’s primary hub for shrimp seed production.

In the fisheries sector, more than 65,000 tons of aquatic products were landed by the province’s fishing fleet during the year, helping support the country’s food security and protein supply.

Amini noted that Bushehr is also one of Iran’s main centers for marine aquaculture, with a cage-fish farming capacity of 65,000 tons. Currently, 21 companies operate in the sector with a combined production capacity of 14,250 tons, while 1,295 tons of marine fish were harvested from offshore cages last year.

The province has further expanded its aquaculture portfolio through the production of seaweed, warm-water fish, ornamental fish, leeches, and marine polychaete worms, underscoring its growing role in diversifying Iran’s aquatic production industry.
