South Khorasan strengthens role as eastern Iran’s almond hub

BIRJAND – South Khorasan province, in the east of Iran, is consolidating its position as a key almond-producing hub in eastern Iran, with this year’s harvest projected at around 2,280 tons despite challenging climatic conditions.

Almond orchards cover 5,597 hectares across the province, with Birjand County accounting for the largest cultivated area at 1,975 hectares, followed by Qaen with 1,595 hectares.

While a significant share of the crop is marketed raw, dried or in bulk, almond processing remains limited due to the fragmented nature of production and the absence of large-scale producers.

To improve productivity and strengthen the sector’s resilience, agricultural authorities are promoting the renovation of low-yield orchards, the use of drought- and cold-tolerant varieties, water-efficient irrigation systems and improved orchard and water management practices.
