Modern irrigation raises grape yields in southern Iran
Khuzestan - The adoption of pressurized irrigation systems in vineyards across Gotvand County, Khuzestan Province, has increased grape yields by 50–67% per hectare while significantly reducing water consumption, according to local agricultural officials.
Maryam Bashiri, Horticulture Officer at the Gotvand Agricultural Department, said modern irrigation methods have improved both productivity and fruit quality by enhancing water-use efficiency and supporting more effective farm management.
She noted that average vineyard yields have risen from 9–10 tons per hectare before the introduction of pressurized irrigation to around 15 tons per hectare, highlighting the technology’s impact on agricultural performance.
Bashiri added that Gotvand, Dezful, Shushtar, Andimeshk, Baghmalek, Ramhormoz, and Izeh are among Khuzestan’s leading grape-producing regions; The successful cultivation of grapes under the province’s hot, arid conditions, she said, reflects years of research and the development of climate-adapted varieties.
“As water scarcity continues to challenge agricultural production, the expansion of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems has become a key strategy in Khuzestan. The success of Gotvand’s vineyards demonstrates that modern irrigation can simultaneously conserve water, improve crop quality, and substantially increase yields.”
