Iran unveils new hybrid lettuce seeds

Tehran – Iran has made significant strides in agricultural innovation with the development of seven new hybrid lettuce seed varieties.

The new cultivars, unveiled by Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri at the National Center for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology of the University Jihad, are poised to enhance the country's vegetable production.

Nouri emphasized the critical role of high-quality seeds in boosting agricultural productivity and achieving self-sufficiency.

He also highlighted that Iran's domestic seed production capabilities are robust, with 98% of seeds being produced domestically. However, the country still relies on imported hybrid seeds for certain crops, particularly those grown in greenhouses.

The newly developed lettuce varieties represent a diverse range of types, including romaine, iceberg, little gem, frisee, and oakleaf. These cultivars are expected to provide farmers with greater flexibility and adaptability to various market demands.

The University Jihad’s research center has been instrumental in developing these new seed varieties. Equipped with advanced laboratories, the center has been working on a project to develop hybrid seeds for several key vegetable crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

By investing in research and development, Iran aims to reduce its reliance on imported seeds and strengthen its position as a global leader in agricultural innovation.
