Iran seeking to boost domestic production, cut banana imports

Tehran – Zahra Jalili-Moghaddam, the director-general of Ministry of Agriculture for tropical and semi-tropical fruits, said the government has taken all the necessary measures to increase domestic banana production and reduce reliance on imports.
“Cultivating bananas within the country is more cost-effective than importing them,” Jalili-Moghaddam said.
She added that last year, Iran imported approximately 664,000 tons of bananas, amounting to a significant expenditure of $439 million.
“To address this, the Ministry is implementing a comprehensive program to enhance banana production,” the deputy minister said.
