Iran introduces new hybrid millet varieties

Tehran - Researchers at the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute (SPII) have achieved a significant milestone, introducing six new hybrid millet varieties to Iranian agriculture for the first time.

The announcement, made by SPII Director Mohammad Zamanian, comes as Iran seeks to enhance its food security and agricultural productivity.

The newly developed varieties include four forage millet hybrids (Hamin, Sadra, Sepehr, and Mahour) and two grain millet hybrids (Mana and Aria), all bred for high yield, disease resistance, early maturity, and reduced water needs.

Zamanian said these characteristics are crucial to achieving the goals outlined in Iran's Seventh Development Plan and its broader food security strategy.

In addition to the millet breakthrough, the SPII also unveiled hybrid sunflower varieties (Arsh and Anika) and a durum wheat variety (Farzadi).
