Gilan’s villa gardens an opportunity for farmers, official says
Rasht – The acting deputy of the Plant Production Improvement Department of Gilan's Agricultural Organization has called for a shift away from monoculture, saying that the northern province's villa-gardens contain uncultivated lands suitable for growing saffron, blueberries, boxwood, ornamental shrubs, and other fast-yielding crops.
Speaking to reporters, Manoochehr Parasafar noted that 50% of Gilan's kiwi production is destined for export.
He added that olives, hazelnuts, flowers, ornamental plants, and shrubs also hold export potential, but stressed that they must be equipped with QR codes to meet market standards.
The official further emphasized the introduction of new crops to the province, including turmeric, ginger, stevia, and various types of berries.
Highlighting saffron as a successful cultivation model in Gilan, Parasafar explained that the crop can thrive in both mountainous and lowland areas.
He said that the province's plains, in particular, offer strong potential for saffron bulb propagation.
