Mashahd - A delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), headed by Mr. Farrukh Toirov, FAO Representative in the Islamic Republic of Iran, visited saffron farms and processing industries in Mashhad to observe the beginning of harvesting season and explore ways to enhance saffron quality and competitiveness.

 

The field visit was headed by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Horticulture Affairs, Mr. Mohammad Mehdi Boroumandi, and brought together government officials and private sector to highlight the importance of improving post-harvest practices and safeguarding product quality integrity in Iran’s saffron value chain.

 

During the visit, the FAO delegation observed traditional saffron cultivation and harvesting alongside modern processing and packaging units where advanced technologies are being used to preserve the spice’s unique aroma, color, and quality. The visit, taken place in Fariman County, also featured a cultural performance, where local girls dressed in traditional attire harvested saffron blossoms, and a group of dancers in traditional costumes performed a welcoming show, showcasing the deep cultural heritage tied to saffron cultivation in the Khorasan region.

 

“Iran is the world’s leading saffron producer, and this crop holds great potential for creating jobs, generating income, and promoting sustainable rural development,” said FAO Representative. “Through collaboration with national partners, FAO is supporting efforts to strengthen the saffron value chain from farm to market and ensure that Iranian saffron remains the global standard for purity and excellence.”

 

FAO is currently implementing the Technical Cooperation Project “Safeguarding Saffron Quality Integrity and Improve the Export this High-Value and Agricultural Commodity” in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, aimed at improving saffron standardization, quality control, and post-harvest practices. The project also includes capacity-building activities for farmers, processors, and laboratory experts to enhance quality assurance and increase Iran’s share in international markets.

 

The visit to Mashhad’s saffron farms and industries reflects FAO’s continued commitment to supporting Iran in strengthening its high-value crops, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and improving the livelihoods of rural communities engaged in saffron production.
