Sarabi cattle a strategic asset for Iran’s livestock sector
Tabriz – The indigenous Sarabi cattle breed is one of Iran’s most valuable livestock genetic resources and a symbol of the country’s native livestock production capabilities, according to the head of the East Azerbaijan’s Agriculture Organization.
Shahram Shafiei said the breed has adapted to local climatic conditions over generations and offers strong potential in milk and meat production, disease resistance, and economic efficiency.
He emphasized that preserving indigenous breeds is essential for safeguarding Iran’s genetic resources, strengthening food security, and reducing dependence on imported livestock breeds.
The official also highlighted the Sarab Indigenous Cattle Support Station as a leading center for research and conservation, calling for greater support for breeding programs to expand the population of this valuable native breed and improve livestock productivity.
