Iranian researchers identify key reproduction, migration genes in Caspian Kutum

Tehran - Researchers at the University of Gilan in north of Iran with support from the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF), have identified genes linked to reproduction and migration in the spring- and autumn-spawning strains of the Caspian Kutum using next-generation RNA sequencing.

Project leader Saman Farasti said the study, for the first time, identified 21 strain-specific genes associated with migratory function and behavior. The species’ transcriptome sequences have also been deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database.

He said the findings mark an important step toward establishing a reference genomic map and developing evidence-based fisheries management strategies to help protect the species’ declining population.

The official added that comprehensive transcriptome comparisons provide valuable data to support future conservation and stock management programs.
