Iran launches roadmap for marine-based economy

Tehran - A new chapter in Iran’s blue economy began with the launch of a tripartite alliance between the Fisheries Research Institute, the Veterinary Organization, and the Agricultural Research, Education, and Extension Organization (AREEO).

The announcement came during the annual meeting of the Iranian Fisheries Science Research Institute, attended by senior agricultural and veterinary officials.

The alliance seeks to implement the President’s directive on developing a marine-based economy and aims to boost aquatic production to 1.9 million tons, marking a strategic shift toward self-sufficiency in food resources.

Officials emphasized that in light of the country’s heavy reliance on imported livestock feed, promoting the production and consumption of seafood—a high-potential and less import-dependent sector—is now a strategic priority.

Achieving this ambitious production target, they noted, requires a comprehensive understanding of sectoral challenges and the application of scientific and research-based solutions. Strengthening collaboration among research bodies, fisheries institutions, and veterinary authorities was identified as a cornerstone of this effort.

AREEO, as the leading scientific authority in Iran’s agricultural sector, was urged to not only uphold its research excellence but also respond more effectively to national implementation needs, bridging the gap between science and policy for the sustainable growth of the blue economy.
