Hamedan – Some 6,000 hectares of planted forests have been established in west-central Hamedan province as authorities push to expand tree cover using drought-tolerant species in response to worsening water scarcity and climate change.

 

The province's total forest area now stands at roughly 45,000 hectares, including natural woodlands and plantations, according to Hamid Khazaei, head of the provincial Forestry Department.

 

Given Hamedan's arid climate and low rainfall, afforestation efforts have concentrated on species suited to dry conditions, he said, adding that private-sector partners help maintain part of the planted areas.

 

“Over the past decade, reforestation programs have also focused on boosting species diversity and vegetation cover, alongside seedling production and wood farming initiatives.”

 

Still, climate change, drought, wildfires, and overgrazing pose persistent threats. Reduced rainfall stresses trees and raises their susceptibility to pests, the official noted.

 

“With per capita forest area at just 260 square meters, far below the national average of 1,700 square meters, Hamedan faces a critical environmental deficit.”
