Annual fishery export stands at $650m

Iran's fishery industry is experiencing a boom, with exports reaching impressive new heights.

According to Hossein Hosseini, deputy minister of agriculture and head of the Iranian Fishery Organization (IFO), the country exported a significant 210,000 tons of fishery products valued at $650 million in the past Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2023 to March 19, 2024).

These products were shipped to a diverse range of 67 countries.

Hosseini, speaking at the 6th Export Potential Exhibition of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran Expo 2024), highlighted the exhibition's role in showcasing Iran's export capabilities. He emphasized the fishery sector's critical role as a source of investment and foreign currency generation. The Ministry of Agriculture, he noted, prioritizes fostering growth in this sector.

Significant investments were made in the fishery industry last year, with the private sector playing a leading role. Hosseini revealed that a remarkable 90% of the investment came from private entities. This investment focus has paid off, with warm-water fish production witnessing a substantial rise, from 5,000 tons in previous years to a commendable 37,000 tons in the past year.

The positive export figures and rising production indicate a thriving fishery industry in Iran. With continued investment and focus, the sector appears poised for further growth and international reach.
