Agricultural output rises fivefold since 1979 Islamic Revolution, AREEO head says

Tehran - Iran’s agricultural production has increased from 25 million tons at the time of the 1979 Islamic Revolution to 135 million tons today despite climate constraints and water scarcity marking a fivefold expansion, according to the head of the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO).

Gholamreza Golmohammadi said AREEO is pursuing a structural transformation aimed at consolidating the country’s agricultural innovation and technology system through targeted, problem-oriented programs.

He noted that the adoption of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, biotechnology, and nanotechnology, alongside collaboration with leading farmers, the private sector, and universities, is expected to accelerate the development of Iran’s food industries.

Describing AREEO as the country’s largest research institution, Golmohammadi said it serves as a cornerstone of national food security, with the economic impact of its applied research in agriculture estimated at more than $2 billion.

The official added that the organization’s influence spans everyday life, from vaccines produced by the Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute to the supply of staple grains, legumes, dairy, and protein products.
