Iranian researchers develop water-efficient cotton varieties

Iranian researchers have developed two new cotton varieties that significantly enhance water efficiency, offering a crucial solution to the country's water scarcity.
Qorban Qorbani, head of Iran’s Cotton Research Institute, announced that these new varieties can increase water efficiency by up to 20%.
“This achievement aligns with the institute's primary objective to develop high-yielding, high-quality cotton varieties that maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact,” he said.
Qorbani said these innovative varieties will be transferred to the private sector for seed multiplication and distribution. “The institute will oversee this process, ensuring quality control and responsible dissemination.”
Compared to previous varieties, these new cultivars offer several key advantages increased yield, improved quality and enhanced water efficiency, he said.
Looking ahead, Qorbani said, the institute plans to introduce two hybrid varieties in the coming years.
“Furthermore, the institute is actively exploring the use of unconventional water sources, such as treated wastewater, for cotton cultivation. This proactive approach aims to ensure the sustainability of cotton production in the face of growing water scarcity.”
