Iran grain production expected to rise in 2024, FAO says

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts a significant increase in Iran's grain output for 2024.

According to the FAO's Food Outlook report, Iran's grain production is expected to reach 20.1 million metric tons (mt) this year, up from 19.8 million mt in 2023. This increase positions Iran as the 10th largest grain producer in Asia.

While wheat production is expected to remain steady at 13.5 million mt, rice production is projected to jump by 18% to 2.6 million mt in 2024. This growth is attributed to government policies aimed at bolstering domestic agriculture and ensuring food security, particularly in the face of potential trade challenges.

The report highlights Iran's strong position in terms of grain reserves. The country ranks third in Asia behind China and India, with current cereal reserves reaching 11.8 million mt, including 8.8 million tons of wheat reserves. This reinforces Iran's ability to meet its domestic needs.

The FAO's prediction aligns with statements from Iran's Agriculture Ministry, which also anticipates wheat production to reach 13.5 million mt in the current agricultural year (September 2023-2024).
