Iran aims to boost aquaculture output by 224,000 tons

The head of Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO) said the country has plans underway to boost the production of its aquatic animals by 224,000 tons.

"The volume of Iran’s production of aquatic animals has increased from 1.3 million tons in 2022 to 1.4 million thousand tons in 2023, showing an increase of 5.8% year on year,” Hossein Hosseini said.

He added, "With the introduction of new investors in this sector, 210,000 tons of fishery products were exported last year, generating an export value of $650 million."

Hosseini emphasized, "In the crop year 1403-1404, it is planned to use 15,000 agricultural wells for aquaculture and then irrigation of farms, if the requirements are met, which will result in the production of 100,000 tons of aquatic products, while by 1401, about 11,000 agricultural wells had been stocked with fish, resulting in the production of 81,000 tons of aquatic products."

Noting that all capacities will be used to increase production, he said, "By mechanizing aquaculture farms on a pilot basis last year and using nanobubbles, we witnessed a 2.5-fold increase in production in fishery fields."

He added, "The production of 60,000 tons of shrimp by agricultural estates, a 50,000-ton increase in production with nanobubble technology, 100,000 tons using dual-purpose pools, and 137,000 tons by Zagros dwellers is predicted in the year 1403-1404."

Hosseini expressed hope that the 224,000-ton increase in production will happen and that we will witness a growth of more than 8% in this sector.
