Tehran – Iran's crop and horticultural production increased by 7 million tons over the past year, despite drought, erratic rainfall, economic challenges, sanctions, and wartime conditions, according to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Crop Production.

 

Speaking at the 32nd Annual Conference of the Dryland Agricultural Research Institute in Maragheh, Majid Anjafi credited the achievement to the synergy among farmers, researchers, experts, and administrators.

 

He noted that the increase reflects both the capacity of producers and tangible gains in agricultural productivity.

 

Anjafi highlighted a historic milestone in wheat production, with output reaching 14.1 million tons, a national record. He added that 85% of the country's food needs are now met domestically, with only 15% reliant on imports.

 

Emphasizing water resource constraints, Anjafi said the focus for wheat has shifted toward sustainable production, improved quality, and higher efficiency. He stressed the importance of expanding and promoting rainfed farming, urging that sustainability plans not be limited to wheat but extended to pulses, medicinal plants, and other rainfed-compatible crops.

 

“On oilseeds, Anjafi announced a target to raise annual production from the current 350,000 tons to 600,000 tons, with serious planning already underway.”

 

He expressed hope that the new agricultural year would begin under favorable conditions, with the adoption of new technologies and research-backed methods driving further productivity gains and production stability across the country.
