Iran sets up major disease-free facility to improve shrimp
brand
The Iranian Ministry of Agriculture has launched a major
project in the southern Bushehr Province to mass produce disease-resistant
shrimp, the head of Iran Fishery Organization (IFO) announced.
The construction of the facility has begun with an
investment of $13.5 million, Hossein Hosseini said last week.
He added that the plan implementation will lead to
self-sufficiency in shrimp production, thereby cutting imports. Also, it will
create better employment prospects for the youth in this sector.
Head of Bushehr Province’s Fishery Department Aqil Amini
said the facility is being constructed in Tangestan county, southwestern
Bushehr province, in an area of 3,000 hectares.
He further said that six more projects will be launched in
the future not in the too distant future which will add 2,000 tons to the
country’s total farmed fish.
Back in 2014, four epidemic diseases wiped out shrimp farms
in Khuzestan, Bushehr and Sistan and Baluchestan Provinces, imposing heavy
losses on the farmers. The plan was designed to improve productivity as well as
livelihoods of the shrimp farmers.
