Iran targets end to fish fry imports as native aquaculture moves toward commercialization
Tehran – Iran has signed a landmark agreement between the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology and the Fisheries Sciences Research Institute to commercialize indigenous fish breeding technologies, aiming to eliminate reliance on imported fry and complete the domestic aquaculture value chain.
The memorandum, enacted under Article 63 of the Seventh National Development Plan, is designed to connect research achievements with scientific infrastructure and private capital, reviving the long-missing reproduction link in the country's aquaculture sector.
Despite years of progress in breeding techniques for native and high-value species at the institute, most innovations have remained confined to laboratories, never reaching mass production or market readiness.
This new pact now paves the way for private investment and targeted public backing, with the dual goal of bolstering food security and scaling up cage farming, a segment long hindered by foreign fry dependency.
