East Azarbaijan hosts Middle East’s largest modern greenhouse complex
East Azarbiajan– Two greenhouse complexes in Jolfa county, in northwestern Iran, have been recognized as the largest modern facilities of their kind in the Middle East and among the world's top 10 hydroponic greenhouses, underscoring Iran's growing capacity for high-tech agricultural production, a senior official said.
Shahram Shafiei, head of the East Azarbaijan for Agriculture Organization, described greenhouse expansion as a strategic imperative for enhancing productivity, conserving water, and ensuring sustainable food output. He cited the "Aras Tarla Amir," "Aras Tarla Amin," and "Guzel Tabiat Aras" complexes as standout examples of private-sector investment in knowledge-driven farming.
According to Shafiei, the Amir and Amin complexes symbolize the province's technical know-how and potential to deliver cutting-edge crop production. Key benefits of greenhouse development include optimized water usage, higher yields, climate resilience, job creation, and a transition toward smarter, more economical agriculture.
With its favorable climate, skilled workforce, and active investors, East Azarbaijan is poised to become a national greenhouse powerhouse, playing a vital role in both domestic food security and agricultural exports, he added.
During a recent site inspection, Shafiei said officials reviewed infrastructure gaps, financing needs, investment red tape, and other hurdles facing growers, calling for closer coordination among relevant agencies to support the sector. He praised investors for their long-term vision and commitment to innovation, production growth, and employment.
"The future of farming hinges on knowledge, innovation, targeted investment, and making the most of our existing assets," Shafiei concluded. "Greenhouse development is one of the surest paths to sustainable and profitable agriculture."
