Tehran - Iran has deployed modern irrigation systems across more than 3.2 million hectares of agricultural land since the early 1990s, a senior official at the Ministry of Agriculture said.

 

Fariborz Abbasi, head of the ministry’s Modern Irrigation Systems Development Program, said that over 3.2 million hectares have been equipped nationwide during this period.

 

He added that additional systems have been implemented through private and public investment, although consolidated data on these projects have not yet been finalized.

 

Based on current funding levels, Abbasi said Iran plans to implement nearly 30,000 hectares of modern irrigation systems in the agricultural sector in 2025 (1404). Under longer-term targets, the country aims to develop 200,000 hectares of pressurized irrigation systems and 150,000 hectares of smart subsurface irrigation systems each year.

 

He also highlighted progress in smart irrigation technologies, noting that several capable domestic companies have emerged in recent years.

 

According to Abbasi, more than 110 smart irrigation pilot projects have been launched across different provinces, with performance evaluations showing positive results.
